Treating Periodontal Disease Q & A
Can you fix periodontal disease?
Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by careful daily brushing and flossing. In the more advanced stages of gum disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth become seriously damaged and teeth can be lost due to looseness and associated chronic infection.
What causes periodontal disease?
Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. However, other factors can contribute to periodontal disease. These include: Hormonal changes, such as those occurring during pregnancy, puberty, menopause, and monthly menstruation, make gums more sensitive, which makes it easier for gingivitis to develop.
Can your gums grow back?
Receding gums are gums that have pulled away from a tooth, leaving its delicate root exposed. ... Your gum tissue doesn't regenerate the way other types of tissue does (like the epithelial tissue of your skin, for example). As a result, receding gums don't grow back.
Is dental bone loss hereditary?
Up to 30% of the population may be genetically predisposed to gum disease. Characterized by sensitive and inflamed gums, this common problem is linked to decay and, when left untreated, can result in tooth and bone loss.
